We are thrilled to launch this student-led podcast, where our mission is to break down the complexities of cybersecurity into easily understandable language for everyone. Our main goal is to strengthen the conversation around digital safety here in Iceland and offer practical, actionable advice for staying secure online, regardless of your technical background.

What to Expect from Frostkastið

Frostkastið is a podcast driven by students working closely with the Frostbyte Cybersecurity Research Lab, all under the guidance of professors at Reykjavík University. While most episodes will be in Icelandic, we might feature English episodes if we have international guests.

Our vision is to learn together and foster a greater understanding of computer and cybersecurity in Iceland. We'll often keep things simple and clear, but we'll also dive deeper into specific topics when needed. New episodes will be released every other week.

Our Intro Episode: Cybersecurity for the Everyday Person

In our very first episode, we introduce ourselves and lay the groundwork for what's to come. We delve into the fundamental question: What is cybersecurity, really, and why is it so critical in our increasingly digital world?

We'll cover important topics, including:

  • Defining Cybersecurity: Understanding what digital security truly entails, beyond just passwords and antivirus [00:00].
  • The Importance for Iceland: Discussing why cybersecurity is particularly vital in our highly digitized nation, where technology touches every aspect of our lives, from healthcare to banking and communication [17:15].
  • Recent Events: We examine real-world scenarios, such as the cyber-attack on Reykjavík University on February 2nd, 2024, to highlight the tangible risks [29:45].
  • The Human Element: Exploring the common saying, "Is the human the weakest link?" and how individual knowledge and actions play a crucial role in overall security [39:42].
